Dr. Shaheer Aboobaker
Dr. Aboobaker hails from South Africa and obtained his medical degree at the University of KwaZulu Natal, and completed his residency at the University of Cape Town. While at the University of Cape Town, Dr. Aboobaker was awarded the Ophthalmological Society Medal for academic achievement by the Fellowship of Ophthalmologists of South Africa. Dr Aboobaker then completed a 2 year Vitreoretinal Fellowship at the University of Toronto. Dr. Aboobaker joined the team at the Toronto Retina Institute in 2018, where he now serves as Managing Partner since 2022 and Co-Director of Clinical Research since 2025.
Dr. Aboobaker's academic and research interests include advancements in technology and innovative therapies. He is an investigator in over 20 global clinical trials. He serves as Chief Medical Officer for MediversAI, a health tech startup working to integrate I into surgical training and evaluation. He is an advisor and speaker for multiple companies in the Retina space.
Dr. Aboobaker's passion for education and philanthropy led him to co-found the Young Professionals Bursary, a scholarship aimed at assisting disadvantaged students in South Africa. He also serves on the Canadian Ophthalmology Society Sub-Committee to establish an Equity-focused Mentorship Program for budding Ophthalmologists in Canada. He is passionate about equitable and universal access to healthcare and is an advocate for healthcare reform in Ontario and Canada.
Outside the office, he enjoys his time with his young family and is passionate about sports when he gets the time, soccer in particular, and is a fervent supporter of Manchester United Football Club and Toronto FC. He is a self-proclaimed foodie and enjoys travel and exploring new cultures and cuisines
