Dr. Mandell, MD, FRCSC

Dr. Mandell was born and raised in Toronto. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology with distinction from the University of Western Ontario in 2002 where received the A.O Jeffrey Scholarship given to the student with the highest average across disciplines (cell biology and genetics). He subsequently completed both his Doctor of Medicine degree with honours and his ophthalmology residency at the University of Toronto.
During his training, Dr. Mandell twice received the St. Michael’s Hospital ‘most outstanding resident’ award. He also received the Hospital for Sick Children “Humanitarian Award” in recognition of compassionate patient care.
Following his residency, Dr. Mandell completed a subspecialty fellowship in Medical Retina at the University of Toronto. Dr. Mandell is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He is also an active member of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the Canadian Retina Society.
Dr. Mandell has a keen interest in teaching and joined the faculty at the University of Toronto as a Lecturer and Clinical instructor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences.
He is an attending surgeon at St. Michael’s Hospital where he teaches medical students and ophthalmologists-in-training. He also teaches regularly at the Mississauga Academy of Medicine. He has published several articles in the scientific literature, has presented his work internationally and is actively involved in clinical trials. Dr. Mandell’s clinical practice and research is focused on medical diseases of the retina including age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular occlusion, diabetic retinopathy, macular diseases, and the surgical management of retinal holes and tears.
He joined the Toronto Retina Institute in 2012, and also practices in Mississauga.
Dr. Mandell is an active sailor. His other hobbies include camping in Northern Ontario, classical piano, guitar and basketball. Dr. Mandell is married to Julia; they live in Toronto with their two children.
